Birdy – Shelter

Francesca Baker

Not that she needs our approval, with Fearne Cotton having already named Birdy’s cover of The XX’s ‘Shelter’ as  her Record Of The Week and debut cover ‘Skinny Love’ (originally by Bon Ivor) having spent seven weeks on Radio 1’s A list, but for what its worthJasmine Van den Bogaerde adds a  musical stance as melodic beguiling as her name, the classical training of her young years evident. An eerie and haunting vibe pervades, meaning that one can spend too much time wondering where the bubble gum saccharin pop that should be coming from a fifteen year old girl evaporated to, rather than appreciate the steely determination of a teenager with talent who states that ‘I am determined to make music my career. I’ve always known it is a big part of my life.’
