Jacob Johansson once went under the moniker Det Stora Monstret (The Big Monster). Despite acclaim for the project, he’s now made a shift, and decided to team up with some pals and launched Mount Song. The eponymous debut album (out on 5 May via Suncave Recordings) is a melding of grunge, folk, and pop, spanning the whole gamut of styles and emotions. Take first single Halo. The traditional folk-indie tropes and melodic wanders suddenly veer off into a psychedelic twist and tangle. Loose jangles of guitars a la The Shins flicker with sunshine, whilst the depth and elusive of subject matters adds a dark angle.
‘I write about that which feels urgent to me, the things that knock me out; my encounters with life’s monsters.’ says Jacob. ‘That which feels most urgent for me in the moment becomes the content of the songs.’
