I’ve been in Brixton rain, and it doesn’t sound this good. Brixton Rain is the new track from Ballerina Black, aka Bobby Moynahan, supported by co-founding bassist Esli Sugich, Scott Eton on keys & guitar and Romeo Mendoza on drums. But there is something about falling rain and the prisms of London lights that form in its droplets, as you walk along, shifting and teetering on shaky foundations. Dramatic rhythms and chromatic bass lines, the articulate melodies under mumbled lyrics fuse to create something untouchable yet elemental. A bit gazey, a bit grungey, it shimmers through all shades of grey, steel shards of power gently pricking at you like needles.
